Cadets at the 2008 WA Youth Awards

The Cadets WA program was well presented at the 2008 WA Youth Awards, held at the Perth Convention Centre on Thursday 10 April, with cadets being selected as finalists in the Environment category.

The WA Youth Awards gala presentation evening was hosted by Channel 7's Ray kuka, who introduced the 430 guests to some of Western Australia's most outstanding young people.

The A/Executive Director Community Engagement, Ms Fiona Lander said "It was wonderful, as the organisers of the WA Youth Awards, to see cadets from our own Cadets WA program profiled and rewarded for thier achievements."

The Duncraig SHS Bush Ranger Cadet Unit was nominated in the Environment Category for their efforts in conservation and rehabilitation, starting from when the unit commenced in 1998. Cadets began to rehabilitate the nearby bushland area which had been degraded over the years. Since then, cadets have undertaken numerous environmental activities including National Park maintenance at Yanchep and Rockingham, implementing coastal erosion strategies at Point Peron and on Penguin Island, and night stalk counts for the Perth Zoo. They have commenced the Tambellup five year salinity project, growing 100 trees each over a six month period which will then be taken to Tambellup and planted.

Well done to all cadets - keep up the great work and maybe we will see even more cadets and cadet units selected as finalists in next year's WA Youth Awards.
